The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) is reporting an additional human rabies case in a 46-year-old man from Kota Padawan, Kuching, Sarawak. The patient passed away on Aug. 7.

Rabies was diagnosed through a laboratory test conducted by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) on August 9.

With this confirmation, rabies confirmed cases among people in Sarawak since the declaration of the outbreak on July 1, 2017 were 20 cases; including 19 deaths. Of these 20, four cases occur in 2019.

The man was believed to have been bitten by a puppy given by a friend from Kuching at the back of his right hand on June 15. In addition, his eight-year-old daughter was also bitten by the same dog on the same day.

Health officials report the man and his daughter had cleansed their wounds under running water for 15 minutes. He brought his daughter to receive medical care but did not disclose that he laso was bitten by the dog, this did not receive rabies post-exposure prophylaxis.
